What is a “Mind Map”?

You will see a method, called “Mind Map”. Tony Busan is the father of this type of learning. He found that it is easy and quick to learn a foreign language with the help of it. The Mind Map is a schematic representation of any topic you might choose.

Therefore, this is an easy and convenient way of presenting the material through keywords or ideas. It can be drawn in a number of ways – like a branched tree, like a sun with several beams, or another figure that seems easy for you to remember.

Here is an example of a Mind Map:

The main idea lies in the core of the map (or the title of the lesson), and each subsequent branch appears under the topic of the main one. The goal is to be as colorful as possible, with more items to indicate the topic of the lesson. So let’s get started with Bulgarian language basics.

Start learning Bulgarian language basics

What is the most basic thing you have to learn? Yes, it is the alphabet. That will be the purpose of our mental map. It will teach you everything you need to know about the Bulgarian alphabet.

At the core of this Bulgarian language basics map lies the main topic, the Bulgarian alphabet. All you have to do is create the branched stems from it. Each branch is a subtopic of the previous one. In this case, you will have 30 branches for each of the letters in the Bulgarian alphabet, and a corresponding word for each letter.

By doing this, you will learn the Bulgarian language basics much faster. Why? Because your brain can better remember when you are playing. Think of it as a children’s game, with colors, games, and excitement.

Therefore, the mental map could help people of all ages and learning purposes.

The good thing is that you have no restrictions here – set your imagination free, and just have fun while you learn.

The Bulgarian keyboard

Everything you need to know about the Bulgarian keyboard:

You live in Bulgaria, or you often communicate with Bulgarians in writing. Therefore, you should know something about the Bulgarian keyboard. You may wonder what it is.

First of all, do you know that there are two types of Bulgarian keyboards? You may wonder what is the difference between them and which is the easiest one for you to use?

Still, here is everything you need to know about the Bulgarian keyboard.

The Bulgarian keyboard and what it has to do with the QWERTY keyboard

If you want to use a Bulgarian keyboard, you should know that there are two most widely used keyboard layouts. They are: “The keyboard layout of the typewriters and accounting machines”, also known as the БДС “BDS” and the other so-called “Phonetic” keyboard layout. The arrangement of the letters in the two designs is different and follows a different logic.

The basics

Historically, the Bulgarians used the keyboard layout of the typewriters, produced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nowadays no one uses them, but some professions used these old typewriters until as recently as 15 years ago. As a result, even today, some people use a traditional, old typewriter style for their digital devices. It is called БДС /BDS/ style or Typewriter style.

It was not very simple to operate an old typewriter. When you press a letter key, a mechanical lever system strikes a hammer with a cast matrix of the corresponding letter towards the paper. The hammer strikes the paper through an ink-dipped ribbon which lies between the paper and the hammer. As a result, the letter is printed on the paper.

The BDS Bulgarian keyboard (Typewriter)

bulgarian keyboard bds

If you want to use this type of Bulgarian keyboard, you should know the logic behind it. With this keyboard, you can type the most commonly used letters О, Н, Т and А (all in Cyrillic) with your thumb and forefinger. Therefore, this keyboard gives you the opportunity to write with ease. This is its main goal.

If you take a look at the BDS keyboard, you will notice that the vowels and the semi-vowels are positioned at one side of the keyboard and the consonants are on the other. You will notice that with this Bulgarian keyboard you can use both hands as evenly as possible. The other thing you may notice is that this type of Bulgarian keyboard is not connected at all with the QWERTY layout.

The QWERTY keyboard

bulgarian keyboard qwerty

Maybe, you know everything about the QWERTY keyboard. Therefore, you also probably know that it is the most common keyboard layout for English. There are various alternative keyboard layouts also. The different countries may be using different standards. But most often they have modified QWERTY layouts.

Bulgarian keyboard – Phonetic

Bulgarian phonetic keyboard

If you want to make the most of your understanding of the Bulgarian keyboard, the phonetic layout is your solution. Maybe, it is easiest to use if you are a foreigner. In this layout, the positions of the most Bulgarian letters coincide with the corresponding letters of the QWERTY keyboard.

Further, if you are a foreigner, and you want to learn more. We can help you out. First of all, learn about our training programs and find the best one for your needs. How to say Hello in Bulgarian

If you are wondering how to properly greet and say hello in Bulgarian read this article.

How to say Hello in Bulgarian

According to traditional beliefs, the greeting is an expression of upbringing. With an appropriate address, you will start a conversation with the person you respect on the right foot. Thus, you can exchange information with others in a polite and familiar pattern. People in the same linguistic community usually greet the same way.

But when you travel, you learn that people in different countries have their own ways of saying Hello.

When you are in Bulgaria, you learn that there are many ways to say Hello in Bulgarian. When you greet your colleagues and friends, you do it more informally. But when you say hello in Bulgarian to your boss or someone you don’t know, you should use a different type of greeting. Here is how you say hello in Bulgarian when you talk to different people.

How to say hello in Bulgarian when you talk to a stranger

When you first meet a person, it is appropriate to be restrained and polite.

However, you should not overdo it with kindness because you may be making a wrong impression. It is best to start the conversation with „Добро утро“, „Добър ден“, or „Добър вечер“ whichever part of the day is.

Handshaking in this situation is not obligatory.

If the person isn’t from your linguistic community, be careful how you shake hands with them because the shaking is different in different countries. When you say hello in Bulgarian, shaking hands is accompanied by a look in the eyes. Then you can ask the person how he is doing.

Now is the right moment for you to demonstrate your upbringing and interest.

Avoid hugging, kissing, and tapping on the shoulder if you are not close to the person. When you talk to someone you’ve just met, it’s not polite to hold your hand in your pocket. Instead of “Чао” it is more appropriate to use the word “Довиждане” when you say goodbye to someone.

How to say hello in Bulgarian when you talk to friends

When you say hello in Bulgarian to someone you already know,  you can be more relaxed and behave more intimately.

You can use the words “Здравей”, “Здрасти”, “Радвам се да те видя”, and so on. These words suggest more friendly communication. You can also afford a handshake in this case. This kind of warm greeting will help you show that you are happy to see the people in question. Of course, you should not shake hands with anyone if your hands are dirty.

Keep in mind that it’s right for a man to greet the woman first.

If you are younger, you should be the first to greet too. You can end the conversation with all the words you use daily, and there is no need to pay special attention. You can say, “Чао, беше ми приятно!”, „Радвам се, че се видяхме!”, etc. If you already know the person you are about to talk to, you can afford more friendly and casual behavior when saying hello in Bulgarian.

Why is it important?

When meeting with people from other nationalities, it is appropriate to learn the greetings received in their country because they are certainly different from your own. When meeting a foreigner, showing that you respect them by learning the right way to greet will make it easier for you to get accepted.

Bear in mind that there are also different endings to a conversation in official and informal communication.

The Bulgarian people are warm and meet new people with ease. That’s why you will find it very easy to say hello in Bulgarian, no matter the situation.

In the Bulgarian alphabet, you always read the letters in the same way. In contrast to some other languages, there is only one sound for each letter. Of course, there are a few minor exceptions.

Yet, letter pronunciation is straightforward every time. Therefore, reading in Bulgarian is a piece of cake.

You read what you write. So it’s easy.

Who created the Cyrillic alphabet?

The World knows the Cyrillic as the Russian alphabet. Nevertheless, it comes from Bulgaria.

It all stars in the 9th century. In year 855-862 the Saints Cyril and Methodius create the so-called Glagolitic alphabet which is the predecessor of the Cyrillic. The saints are believed to be Bulgarian born brothers although they live in the East Roman Empire. Together Cyril and Methodius coin the Glagolitic by order of the Roman Emperor.

Their alphabet is unusual, exotic, and extremely hard to learn. As a result, it quickly became unpopular.

The Bulgarian ruler at those years is Tsar Simeon the Great. He orders to Saint Clement of Ohrid to create a new script. Not by chance, Saint Clement is one of the five disciples of Cyril and Methodius. Together the scholars struggle with teaching Glagolitic to the Orthodox priests in Moravia.

The Tsar wanted the new alphabet to be more natural to apprehend compared to the Glagolitic.

At that time most of the Orthodox Christian holy books were written in Greek and Coptic. Because these languages were familiar to the Bulgarian priests, Saint Clement coined the Cyrillic as a mixture of Greek, Coptic, and Glagolitic.

However, the alphabet kept only a few of the original Glagolitic letters nowadays.

In the following 10th century the five scholars of Cyril and Methodius spread the Cyrillic alphabet around the region. It is mainly used to preach Christianity through the Orthodox countries. For this reason, it became the basis of other Slavic alphabets. It includes the Russian, Serbian, Polish, etc.

Therefore, if you learn Bulgarian, you will acquire the ability to understand other Slavic languages better.

Over 300 million people around the world use the Cyrillic script nowadays.

Besides in Bulgaria, the alphabet is official in several other countries. These are Russia; Serbia; Northern Macedonia; Belarus; Montenegro; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Ukraine; Kyrgyzstan; Mongolia; Tajikistan; and by 2018 Kazakhstan.

Some decades ago, even Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan used the Cyrillic.

Some letters in the Bulgarian language have peculiar features.

The letters from the Glagolitic and Coptic are the weirdest ones.

They are Ж – Ц – Ч – Ш – Щ – Ь – Ъ – Ю – Я.

Moreover, just as the letter “H” is silent in some languages, there is such a letter in the Bulgarian language.

If you see the letter “Ь” /er-maluk, literally – small R/, you cannot pronounce the sound of it. It only goes together with “O” behind it /ьо/, and it reads like [yo]. “Ь” is used to soften the “O” sound together with “Й” /e-kratko, literally short E/ which is also used to soften the “O”.

How to learn a foreign language quick and easy

How to learn a foreign language quick and easy

Teza Team

Everyone would like to learn a foreign language because they know that it opens a whole new world before them. That is why we introduce a tried-and-tested method of learning a foreign language.

In the first place, the desire and attitude are the most important – you cannot learn anything if your initial attitude is like: “It’s a mission impossible”.

You have to prepare and supply materials, because the goal is to learn as children do it – playing and having fun. You need a large white sheet (cardboard), colored pencils and motivation J

The method is called “Mind Map”, and its creator is Tony Busan. As a result of long observation and analysis, he found that it is easy and quick to learn a foreign language with the help of it. The Mind Map is a schematic representation of any topic you might choose. It is an easy and convenient way of presenting the material through key words or ideas. It can be drawn in a number of ways – like a branched tree, like a sun with several beams, or another figure that is easy for you to remember.

Here is an example of a Mind Map:

Online Bulgarian - tree graphic

At the core of the map lies the main idea (or the title of the lesson), and each subsequent branch appears under the topic of the main one. The goal is to be as colorful as possible, with more items to indicate the topic of the lesson.

What is the first thing we learn in a foreign language? Yes, it’s the alphabet. That is why we will make a mental map whose purpose is to teach us the Bulgarian alphabet.

At the bottom is the main topic – the Bulgarian alphabet from which starts the branched stems. They are quite bold at the base and thinning towards the end. Each branch is a subtopic of the previous one. In our case, we will have 30 branches for each of the letters in the Bulgarian alphabet, as well as sample words with the corresponding letter.

It has been proven that the brain remembers many times easier and faster when it comes to playing. It’s working the same way children discover the world – with colors, games and entertainment.

In this case, the mental map could help people of all ages and learning purposes.

The good thing is that you have no restrictions here – relax your imagination and have fun!
